National Geographic Traveler Highlights
Charleston For Immediate Release, April
2004
Charleston, South Carolina received distinction in the March 2004
issue of National Geographic Traveler (NGT), as one of the “World’s Best
Unspoiled Destinations”. NGT revels in the world of travel, and in this issue it
ranked 115 worldwide destinations.
NGT gave Charleston a superb score of
71, which ranked it 9th of the 115 surveyed destinations. Charleston was noted
for its excellent condition of historic structures and outlook for the future.
Coming in at number one was The Norweigan Fjords, with Cape Breton Island,
Canada, South Island, New Zealand, and Torres del Paine, Chile all tying for the
number two position and Tasmania, Australia right behind at number three.
The magazine notes that “the destinations in the best shape (including
Charleston) face relatively few threats or, significantly, have learned how to
handle them.” This was the first year the magazine conducted its unconventional
survey noting that the highest ranking destinations were “unspoiled” due to low
development pressures, environmental problems, civil strife, cultural erosion,
and mass tourism.
NGT gathered a global panel of over 200 experts in the
following fields: ecology, sustainable tourism, geography, urban and regional
planning, travel writing and photography, historical preservation, cultural
anthropology, and archaeology. They were asked to rate the places they were
familiar with using the following criteria: environmental and ecological
quality, social and cultural integrity, condition of any historic buildings,
aesthetic appeal, quality of tourism management, and the outlook for the future.
With a circulation of 724,119, NGT editorials focus on domestic and
foreign destinations, personal travel reflections, food and restaurants, great
places to stay, road trips, cultural events and rewarding getaways that address
readers’ travel styles and interests.
